Health FACT or MYTH? Holiday Edition! Week 1

Have you ever considered this Holiday myth? How many times do we think to ourselves, "Hm, if I just wait until the Thanksgiving meal to consume all my calories for the day, that HAS to be healthier!"
Researchers at Cornell University set out to find if this idea really WAS healthier! Throughout the semester, students were invited to attend a lunch. Half of the participcants were instructed to fast for 18 hours beforehand, while the other half were not. All the lunches featured a buffet with bread rolls, french fries, chicken, cheese, carrots and green beans. Hidden scales and cameras recorded the amount of each food item that participants consumed, and in what order.
The results? the 18-hour fasters went straight for the more caloric starches and proteins. Bread, fries, chicken, and cheese were among the first items eaten by 76% of the fasters, compared to only 49% of the non-fasters! Vegetables were favored as the first food by more of the non-fasters: 51% non-fasters ate carrots and green beans first, versus 24% of the fasters. Another interesting take away - whichever food group the participants started with, they ate much more of that particular group in comparison to the other foods available!
Take home holiday message: Saving your hunger and meal for the Thanksgiving feast does not mean you will have a healthier day! This study shows you may choose to run for the starchier and more caloric foods - and consume more of them. Be sure to eat healthy balanced food on Thanksgiving day and avoid coming to the meal overly hungry!
